Music and Gender

I am not a musician of any kind but music has still played a role in my life. I used to be in my middle school choir group. I think I joined my seventh grade year and my choir teacher was a male but the majority of the group were women. There were only five boys in our entire class, I do not remember how many of us there were but it was a large class. The boys would you usually sing the lower notes except for this one student, he could sing really high and hit every note. We all would work together and form beautiful beautiful pieces and despite the fact that these five boys in our class stood out they could sing beautifully and no one thought it was weird or thought that they didn’t deserve to be in that class. We even got to preform Seussical the Musical with this group and everyone always had so much fun.
Another way I’ve seen gender differences in my musical experiences is in my church choir. The main instrument played is the organ which I’ve seen mostly played by men not saying women don’t play it or can’t play but at my church it is usually a male and the choir is all female this time. I’ve seen differences in the taste in music me and my boyfriend have. I like slower songs that have a more relaxed kinda vibe to them like R&B, Indie, Ballads. My boyfriend likes faster songs, stronger beats like rap and hip hop. We both like a variety of things but usually tend to lean towards those particular genres.
As far as my music experience here at converse I think that having a music major as a roommate has exposed me to different types of music I would usually not listen to. She is from China so many of her songs are in a different language and that is always fun to hear around the apartment. I feel like me and my friends are always playing music around the apartment or in our cars and we all listen to very different things. I don’t know if my music experience would be any different is I went to a co-ed school, maybe if I had a different roommate.

  3. Being in the choir in school and going to church are great ways to be exposed to some really beautiful music. At the moment, you are experiencing a very unique way of receiving music and culture by attending a mostly all girls college. We may not have this same experience in the near future. You are presently a part of some wonderful history here...

  4. I think it is awesome that you have been experienced to diverse music because of your roommate. I have never seen anyone play the organ live but I have always wanted to.

  6. In middle school, we had a female chorus teacher and in high school, we had a male chorus teacher. Hip hops beats are really cool, it makes me want to get up and dance

  7. I love Seussical! I'm glad you were able to have such a good choir experience, because I find that a lot of people in run into hated choir when they were in middle school. A majority of my middle school choir was girls too, but we actually had a good number of guys.

  8. It's interesting to hear about the one boy in your choir that sang soprano. Almost all young men eventually end up as tenors/baritones/basses when their voices change, of course, but there are a few who re-learn how to sing alto/soprano by strengthening their falsetto. They're called counter-tenors, and in the Classical music world a good counter-tenor is a really sought-after voice.
